“Once There Was…” post-production diary

Posted on July 1st, 2007 in OTWOTW by emre

I think I broke a speed record for myself by editing four scenes today; that’s eight minutes. I started with scene two, followed by scene one, then three (a) and (b). My eyes are sore and I need a rest. Watch a snippet!

Still going strong! I edited another eight minutes today, which means the film will be finished in a day or two. I am leaving the difficult dinner scene for last.

The radio doesn’t sound like one, though I’m sure you will fix that. The newspaper slap is really funny :P

Another thought: we do have other angles of the window scene when the slap occurs, right?

It’s a rough cut, so the only thing I have done is to splice clips. The radio track is an actual radio podcast, but obviously not yet matched to the acoustics of the kitchen. All that comes later, as you guessed. Look for the audio mastering item in the post-production schedule.

Window “scene”? Do you mean the POV shot out of the window?

Coincidentally I am editing the last kitchen scene right now. I expect to complete everything except the dinner scene today.

I recall we have a POV shot of Emine looking out the window. Do we have a POV shot or right-shoulder shot of Emine slapping Ben?

No, we do not, but it would be amusing! That would look like the DP is slapping Ben to act better.

As predicted, I got everything except the dinner scene done. I could have done that too had the last scene not completely flummoxed me. I’m still not happy with it, but it will do for a rough cut. The other scenes are great.

In anticipation of completing the film, I contacted the composer to set up an appointment next week. After the rough cut we can all take a look at it to see what needs to be fixed.

OK, I messed up — I meant POV or right-hand shoulder of Ben getting slapped by Emine.

Or maybe that would be assuming male point of view too much…

Glad to hear things are working for you.

…and it’s finished! Just in time for me to go out and see the fireworks. You’d think they did it for us!

Now I need to repeatedly watch all twenty three minutes of it to make sure it is cohesive.

Yesterday I had my first meeting with our composer. We exchanged ideas over a drink at our local pastry shop. I think we understood each other. I look forward to hearing the results!

Straight after that, I went to dub Ben and Tony’s office scenes.
